Signing a PDF

Add a signature to a PDF in blupdf: draw or type it, save it for next time, place it on the line, resize it and download the signed copy. No credits needed.

Signing is the quickest job in blupdf: create your signature once, click where it goes, download. Signatures are placed as picture objects that you can move, resize and remove, and placing them costs no credits.

Creating a signature

Choose Signature in the editor's top bar (the pen button in the bottom bar on a phone). The dialog "Create your signature" offers three ways:

  • Draw - sign with a mouse, a trackpad or a finger on a touch screen.
  • Type - type your name and it is set in a handwriting face. Useful when you need something legible and consistent.
  • Saved - pick a signature you kept earlier.

Every signature you create is saved to your account for next time, so the second document takes two clicks. Saved signatures are private to your account; manage them under Settings → Saved signatures, where you can draw a new one or remove old ones. Removing a saved signature does not touch documents where you already placed it.

Placing it

After you confirm, the top bar says "Click on a page to place the signature". Click on the signature line (tap on a phone) and the signature lands there. Then:

  • Move it by dragging.
  • Resize it from a corner handle.
  • Remove it with Delete or Backspace while it is selected.

Place the same signature as many times as the document needs, on any page, including a blank page you added from the page rail. On a scanned document it sits on the rebuilt page like any other object.

Starting from Studio

If signing is the whole job, start from Sign a PDF in Studio: drop the file and pick up the Signature tool once the document opens. Typing "sign this" into the blupdf AI box also opens the signature dialog and costs nothing, because the request is handled in your browser rather than by the AI.

Downloading the signed copy

Download as PDF and the signature is embedded as an image object on the page, exactly where you placed it; JPG and PNG downloads show it too. The DOCX download contains the document's text only and does not include signatures or other pictures. Recipients can open the signed PDF in any viewer; nothing about it depends on blupdf.

What blupdf does not do

  • blupdf places signatures only. There is no general image tool yet for logos or photos.
  • Signatures that were already in the file, such as a scanned signature on a contract, are page content and stay as they are.

Credits

Creating, saving and placing a signature is free, and so is downloading. The only charges on a signing job are the ones every document has: 50 credits per digital page or 80 per scanned page when it first opens, and 1 credit per character for any text you type, for example a date next to the signature. A drawn or typed signature in blupdf is an image placed on the document. Whether that counts as a valid electronic signature depends on your jurisdiction and on the agreement you are signing; blupdf does not verify identity or keep an audit trail of the kind formal e-signature services offer. Only sign documents you are authorised to sign.
