Adding images and signatures

Besides editing text, blupdf lets you place images and signatures anywhere on a page. Both are objects you can move, resize and remove, and both are rendered into the exported PDF as proper image objects — not flattened into the page.

Placing an image

Choose Image from the toolbar and pick a PNG, JPG or SVG from your computer, or drag the file straight onto the page. The image appears at its natural size, centered on the visible part of the page; drag it into position. Transparent PNGs keep their transparency, which is what you want for logos and stamps.

Typical uses: adding a company logo to a letterhead that lost it, replacing an outdated product photo in a datasheet, or dropping a stamp onto a form.

Drawing, typing or uploading a signature

Choose Signature and pick one of three ways to create it:

• Draw — sign with a mouse, trackpad or finger on a touch screen. The stroke is smoothed and saved as a vector, so it stays sharp at any size.
• Type — type your name and pick one of the signature styles. Useful when you need something legible and consistent.
• Upload — use an image of your signature. A photo on white paper works; blupdf removes the background so only the ink remains.

Signatures you create are saved to your account so you can reuse them on the next document without recreating them. They are private to your account.

Positioning and resizing

Drag an object to move it; drag a corner handle to resize it. Resizing keeps the aspect ratio by default; hold Shift to stretch freely. Arrow keys nudge the selected object by a point, and Shift + arrow by ten. Objects snap lightly to the edges of nearby text blocks so a signature sits neatly on a signature line.

Objects can be layered over existing content. If you need to cover something first, use a white rectangle from the toolbar and place the image on top.

Removing or replacing

Select an object and press Delete, or use the toolbar's Remove button. To replace an image while keeping its position and size, select it and choose Replace; the new file takes the same box.

Objects that are part of the original PDF — an existing logo or a scanned signature — are page content, not objects you added. To cover them, place a white rectangle over the area or edit the page as a scan (see Editing scanned PDFs).

Credits

Placing an image or a signature costs 50 credits per placement. Moving, resizing or removing an object you already placed costs nothing. Export is 20 credits per page as usual — see Credits & billing.

Legal note

A drawn or typed signature in blupdf is an image placed on the document. Whether that counts as a valid electronic signature depends on your jurisdiction and the agreement you are signing; blupdf does not provide identity verification or an audit trail of the kind formal e-signature services offer. Only sign documents you are authorized to sign.
