OCR PDF editor: make any PDF searchable and editable

An OCR PDF editor does two jobs at once: it reads the text out of image-only pages, and it lets you work with that text right away. blupdf recognizes each scanned page with AI OCR, keeps the layout — paragraphs, headings, tables — as editable blocks, and exports a PDF with a proper text layer so the file is searchable everywhere.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Upload an image-only PDF

Scans, faxes, 'printed to PDF' images and phone photos are all detected as image pages on upload.

  2. Step 2

    OCR with layout detection

blupdf recognizes the text and its structure: reading order, block boundaries, sizes and colors. 80 credits per page, charged once.

  3. Step 3

    Review and correct

Recognized text is editable immediately. Search for suspicious characters, click a block and fix it.

  4. Step 4

    Export with a text layer

The exported PDF keeps the page image and adds invisible, selectable text behind it — plus rendered text wherever you edited.

Why blupdf

  • Searchable in any viewer

The text layer is standard PDF text, so Preview, Acrobat, browsers and document systems can search and index it.

  • Structure, not just characters

Layout detection keeps paragraphs and table cells as separate blocks, which is what makes later editing clean.

  • Edit in the same step

There is no separate OCR product to run first; recognition happens on upload and editing starts right away.

  • Privacy by default

Pages are sent to the OCR model only to be recognized, are not used to train models, and are deleted with the document.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between OCR and editing?

OCR turns pixels into text; editing changes that text. blupdf does both: recognition on upload, then click-to-edit on the result, then an export that keeps the recognized text as a searchable layer.

Can I OCR a PDF without editing it?

Yes. Upload, let recognition run, and export. The output is the same document with a text layer added, searchable and copyable.

How many pages can I OCR?

Up to your plan's page limit per document: 10 on Free, 50 on Starter, 200 on Pro and 1,000 on Business. Each recognized page costs 80 credits.

Does OCR change how the page looks?

No. The page image is untouched; the text layer is invisible. Only blocks you deliberately edit are re-rendered.
